Meeting to Revitalize EAIDSNet 30 Oct - 1 Nov 2023 Kigali Rwanda
TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR INVIGORATING THE EAST AFRICAN INTEGRATED DISEASE SURVEILLANCE NETWORK (EAIDSNet)
Background
The East African Integrated Disease Network (EAIDSNet) was established as a project in 2000 at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.
EAIDSNet is a regional collaborative initiative of the national ministries of the EAC Partner States responsible for human and animal health, and other entities that impact public health directly or indirectly including plant and environmental domains. EAIDSNet is operated by the national ministries in collaboration with National health research and academic institutions. With implementation support by the Rockefeller Foundation, the major aim of the network since it was established has been to promote integrated cross-border disease prevention and control through a “One Health” approach and joint action focusing on innovative human, animal, and ecosystem health interventions. The main objectives of EAIDSNet have been to:
- Enhance and strengthen cross-country and cross-institutional collaboration through regional coordination of activities for the prevention and control of both human and animal (zoonotic) diseases under the “One Health” Initiative;
- Promote exchange and dissemination of appropriate information on Integrated Disease Surveillance and other disease control activities;
- Harmonize integrated disease surveillance systems in the region;
- Strengthen capacity for implementing integrated disease surveillance and control activities; and
- Ensure continuous exchange of expertise and best practices for integrated disease surveillance and control.
The EAIDSNet played a key role that necessitated establishing a Health Desk at the EAC Headquarters (HQs) which subsequently turned into the Health Department.
