At the start of the SDGs and in the reporting period (2016/17), Maternal Mortality ratio for EAC region remained high above the SDG target of less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030 (SDG 3.1). For example, maternal mortality ratio ranges from 210 in Rwanda; 336 in Uganda, 362 in Kenya, 334 in Burundi, 398 in United Republic of Tanzania and 789 in South Sudan.
Generally, there has been signs of improvement in maternal health among EAC partner States with an estimated 7% reduction in Maternal Mortality ratios (MMRs) from 2013 to 2017 as per Chart 1 below.
